オランダを拠点に活動するアーティスト、アンネ・ジーネ（Anne Geene）とアルヤン・デ・ノーイ（Arjan de Nooy）の作品集。本書は、鳥類学という学問の形式を借りながら、写真というメディアの可能性をユーモラスに解体した一冊です。2016年の初版刊行時には「世界で最も美しい本コンクール」で金賞を受賞するなど、ブックデザインの観点からも極めて高い評価を得てきました。

本作では、住宅や大理石にカモフラージュする鳥や、水面を走る鳥、マンホールなどの小さな人工的な境界をなわばりとする鳥など、不可解でコミカルな瞬間をまとめたものから、マウリッツハイス美術館に展示されている絵画の中に生息する鳥類についてのリサーチ、紀元前四世紀に書かれたアリストテレス『動物論』への言及など、疑似科学的なアプローチによって、通常の研究では起こり得ないユニークでチャーミングな鳥の生態がまとめられています。擬似科学的なリサーチを通して、しばしばユーモラスで新鮮な「世界を見る方法」を提示した一冊です。

This is a monograph by Netherlands-based artists Anne Geene and Arjan de Nooy. Borrowing the formal structures of the scientific discipline of ornithology, this volume deconstructs the possibilities of photography as a medium with characteristic humour. Since its initial publication in 2016, the work has received immense acclaim for its book design, notably winning a gold medal at the prestigious Best Book Design from all over the World competition.

The work compiles enigmatic and comical moments—from birds camouflaging against residential facades or marble and those running across water, to others claiming small artificial boundaries like manholes as their territory. It also encompasses research into birds inhabiting paintings at the Mauritshuis, alongside references to Aristotle’s (Aristotle) History of Animals, written in the 4th century BC. Through this pseudo-scientific approach, the book documents a unique and charming ecology of birds that would never surface in conventional research. It is a volume that presents a humorous and refreshing 'way of seeing the world' through pseudo-scientific enquiry.

The book was designed by graphic designer Jeremy Jansen, who operates the publishing house Blind Finch Books alongside Anne Geene and Arjan de Nooy.
