本書は、書体の制作過程における人工知能の使用を探求するプロジェクト「Archeology of Consequent Forms」をまとめた作品集。このプロジェクトは、人工知能の書体デザインに対する理解と、それを記述するために使用される言語のリサーチから始まり、彼らのデータセットにある膨大な書体の制作事例を人工知能に取り込み、彼らのパターンや傾向を代表する書体や単一のグリフの膨大なギャラリーを生成。これらは時にMaxitypeの書体理解に非常に類似しているものの、しばしば奇妙な特徴や形状を呈し、それは同ファウンドリーの分類方法における矛盾や、画像の品質の悪さといった、データ中の「ノイズ」に起因しています。その後、生成された形状を抽出し、擬似考古学的プロセスと言えるような整理・精緻化を行い、このプロセスで得られた基本的な形を、それぞれ一つの書体として集め管理しています。
Archeology of Consequent Forms explores the use of neural-network-based artificial intelligence in the creative process of a typeface. The project starts with the exploration of these models’ understanding of typeface design and the language used to describe it.
The result is a vast gallery of typefaces and single glyphs representative of the patterns and tendencies recognised by these models in the vast amount of examples in their datasets. These, while sometimes very similar to our understanding of typefaces, often present strange features and shapes which result from ‘noise’ in the data, such as inconsistencies in our classification methods or poor image context/quality.
In a second step, the generated shapes are extracted and elaborated in what could be described as a pseudo- archeological process. The basic forms resulting from this process are then collected and curated into a single typeface.
