編集者で、写真家としても活動する井手裕介の作品集。
本書は、編集者として活動してきた作家が、2020 年に写真制作を開始して以降、継続的に取り組んできた視覚的な記録をまとめた初の写真集である。編集という職能を通じて培われた「見る/選ぶ/配置する」感覚は、撮影行為と暗室作業へと静かに転位され、世界との距離を測り直す試みとして本書全体を貫いている。

2020 年春、新型コロナウイルス感染による嗅覚喪失という経験を契機に、知覚そのものへの疑念と関心が強まり、作家は時間をかけた撮影行為を伴う、半世紀前につくられたカメラを手に取った。以後、身の回りの風景や出来事を、即時性や説明性から距離を取りながら、時間をかけてフィルムに定着させている。本書は、その過程で生まれた写真群を、一定の物語や結論に収束させることなく、一冊の中に静かに並置したものである。

distance is the first photobook by an editor who began working with photography in 2020. The sensibility cultivated through editorial practice—seeing, selecting, and arranging—quietly shifts here into acts of photographing and darkroom printing, forming an ongoing attempt to recalibrate the distance between the self and the world.
In the spring of 2020, following a COVID-19 infection that resulted in the temporary loss of
smell, the artist’s awareness of perception itself intensified. This experience led him to take up a camera and begin recording fragments of his surroundings. Eschewing immediacy and
explanation, the photographs were slowly fixed onto film over time. Rather than converging
toward a single narrative or conclusion, the images in distance are gently placed alongside one another, allowing perception, memory, and time to remain open and unresolved.
