本書は、キルト制作などに代表される伝統的なパッチワークの思考を、現代の編集・デザイン・執筆という知的生産のプロセスへと拡張した野心的な試みです。

およそ100年前、新聞紙の帽子を被り、自らを情報のスクリーンとして路上で新聞を販売していた女性たちの姿。そして現代、意味のないダミーテキストによってつくられた新聞を身に纏ったバレンシアガのコレクションなど、メディアと身体の関係を歴史的な断片から紐解いた、リンダ・ファン・ドゥールセン（Linda van Deursen）。韓国出身のデザイナー、スス・リー（Susu Lee）は、異言語であるラテン文字を習得する過程で、文字が意味を失い「曲線と直線の断片」へと解体される瞬間を記述しています。

本書は、こうした個々の断片的なリサーチや実践を、パッチワークのように一冊の本としてまとめたもの。「Working in fragments」という概念を体現した実践やリサーチプロジェクトに関する12の寄稿を収録し、端切れを繋ぎ合わせるという伝統的な女性の手仕事の技法が、現代のデザイナーやアーティストの制作手法にいかに影響を与え、示唆を与え続けているかを解き明かします。
