A photobook by photographer Hiroyuki Takenouchi. Rather than documenting a specific period, SLEEPWALK is composed by ‘re-selecting’ photographs, through his present-day perspective, from the archive he has built up through everyday shooting.
Photographing while walking without a clear destination is, as the title SLEEPWALK suggests, a physical act that moves back and forth across the boundary between the conscious and the unconscious. The process of selecting, today, photographs he would not have chosen in the past strongly reflects his inner changes and where he now stands. Brought together, images taken in different seasons and places take on new contexts and relationships, distinct from those of the moment they were made.
Unlike his earlier books WARP AND WOOF and Distance and Depth, this volume is notable for its unpretentious construction, printed on uncoated matte paper. The book was designed and edited by graphic designer Hiromi Fujita. Each copy comes with one of two bookmarks, inserted at random.
