輪郭 vol.01 Image of CITYBOY

ゲイ・クィアのアートブックを専門に扱う書店、boundary booksが発行するインディペンデントマガジン『輪郭』の創刊号。

日本の雑誌文化で長年醸成されてきた「シティボーイ」という概念は、都市生活における洗練や少年性、あるいは特定のライフスタイルの象徴として定着しています。その理想化されたイメージの内側に、実際の都市生活者の多様な現実はどれほど含まれているのでしょうか。

本書は、これまで特定の消費文化的な文脈で語られることの多かったシティボーイ像に対し、boundary booksならではのまなざしを通して、その定義を拡張しようとする試みです。特集「BOYFRIEND IN TOKYO」では、シティボーイ像から想起されるデートコースを男性二人の姿で描き、都市における親密さの在り方を問いかけます。また、「10 LOOKS IN THE CITY」では、これまでのシティボーイ像の周縁にあったであろう人々に焦点を当て、実際に都市に生きる人々のポートレートとインタビューを通じて生活者としてのリアリティを浮き彫りにします。巻末には、写真家、菅野恒平によるエッセイを収録。扉絵の写真は川島小鳥、ブックデザインは有本怜生による。


This is the inaugural issue of Rinkaku, an independent magazine published by boundary books, a bookshop specialising in gay and queer art books.

'City Boy', long cultivated within Japanese magazine culture, has become established as a symbol of urban sophistication, boyishness, and a specific aspirational lifestyle. Yet, one might ask: to what extent does this idealised image actually encompass the diverse realities of urban dwellers?

This publication attempts to expand the definition of the City Boy—a figure historically discussed within specific contexts of consumer culture—through the distinctive gaze of boundary books. The feature 'BOYFRIEND IN TOKYO' depicts dating courses typically associated with the City Boy archetype but portrays them through the presence of two men, questioning the nature of intimacy in the city. Meanwhile, '10 LOOKS IN THE CITY' focuses on individuals who have likely existed on the periphery of the traditional City Boy image. Through portraits and interviews with people actually living in the city, this section highlights the reality of life as a resident.

The issue concludes with a photo essay by photographer Kohey Kanno. It features a frontispiece by Kotori Kawashima, with book design by Leo Arimoto.
