The 2015 annual catalogue of the prestigious Dutch book design award, 'De Best Verzorgde Boeken' (The Best Dutch Book Designs). This special edition commemorates the year the Netherlands and Flanders (northern Belgium) were joint Guest of Honour at the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair, featuring a joint selection of outstandingly designed books from both regions.
This catalogue presents a total of 50 books—33 from the Netherlands and 17 from Flanders. The books were selected not merely for their aesthetic qualities, but from a critical standpoint that values innovation, an inventive synergy between text and image, and the inherent 'necessity' of their creation. The collection offers a definitive snapshot of the cutting edge of European book design at the time.
The catalogue is designed by Irma Boom, one of the world's most influential book designers. This issue marks her return to the project after approximately 25 years; her 1989 edition, created over three decades ago, is held in the permanent collection of MoMA. For this catalogue, she employed a delicate, semi-transparent paper, and all winning books are photographed in an open state. The publication concludes with the text of Irma Boom's 'BOOK MANIFESTO'.
