建築家、レム・コールハース（Rem Koolhaas）率いるOMAが、1995年に東京で行った展覧会に合わせて制作した幻のカタログ『OMA: The Generic City』。本書は、その刊行30周年を記念し、2025年にCapsuleより500部限定で出版された復刻版。

本作は、都市理論とグラフィックデザインの間で交わされた、先見的な対話を再考する一冊です。1995年10月20日から1996年1月20日まで、東京のTNプローブ（TN Probe）で開催された展覧会「OMA in Tokyo: Rem Koolhaas and the Place of Public Architecture」に合わせて刊行された極めて希少なカタログであり、荒木経惟が撮り下ろした東京の写真によるストーリー、磯崎新によるテキスト、そしてレム・コールハースへのインタビューが収録されています。

The thirty-year anniversary of “OMA: The Generic City”—a cult, out-of-print publication dedicated to Tokyo, first released by OMA/Rem Koolhaas in 1995—is celebrated by Capsule in 2025 with a limited reprint, revisiting a visionary dialogue between urban theory and graphic design. A very rare catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition “OMA in Tokyo: Rem Koolhaas and the Place of Public Architecture,” held at TN Probe, Tokyo, October 20, 1995 to January 20, 1996, the book also features a photographic story of Tokyo captured by Nobuyoshi Araki, a text by Arata Isozaki, and interviews with Rem Koolhaas.

“The Generic City is the city liberated from the captivity of centre, from the straitjacket of identity. The Generic City breaks with the destructive cycle of dependency: it is nothing but a reflection of present need and present ability. It is the city without history. It is big enough for everybody. It is easy. It does not need maintenance. If it gets too small it just expands. If it gets too old it just self-destructs and renews. It is equally exciting—or unexciting—everywhere. It is ‘superficial’—like a Hollywood studio lot, it can produce a new identity every Monday morning.”
