ケニヤ生まれのイギリス人陶芸家、マグダレン・オドゥンド（Magdalene Odundo）の作品集。2019年にイギリスで開催された展覧会「The Journey of Things」に伴い刊行された一冊。本書には、44点に及ぶ作品に加え、博物館学的に重要な品々や現代作家の作品を幅広く収録し、作者の制作活動が世界中から得た様々なインスピレーションによって支えられていることを示しています。オドゥンドの作品と歴史的作品が並ぶように構成され、鑑賞者が視覚的・触覚的に読み深めることができるようなブックデザインも素晴らしい一冊です。

作家の作品には斤量の高いコート紙にカラー印刷を、歴史的作品には半透過紙などにモノクロで印刷され、レイアウトや仕様で差別化が図られています。綴じはゴム紐1本でまとめられ、所有者が自由に再構成できる仕様に。鑑賞者が感覚的に読み深めることができる本書は、図録が展覧会の複写になってしまうことを避け、本を通してより深く掘り下げて体験できるべきとの考え方でつくられています。尚、OK-RMは本作の初版にて東京TDC2020のブックデザインカテゴリーにてTDC賞を受賞。3000部限定でリリースされた第4版です。

作者の制作物と共に、バーバラ・ヘップワース（Barbara Hepworth）、ヘンリー・ムーア（Henry Moore）、アンリ・ゴーディエ=ブルゼスカ（Henri Gaudier-Brzeska）、ルーシー・リー（Lucie Rie）、ジャン・アルプ（Jean Arp）といったアーティストの作品、古代ギリシャや古代エジプトの遺物、アフリカ、アジア、中央アメリカの歴史的な陶器、そしてアフリカ全土から集められた様々な儀式用品が収録されています。

The Journey of Things by Magdalene Odundo enters its fourth reprint—a result and testament to the book’s enduring resonance with long-standing and emerging audiences.

The book features 44 of Odundo’s vessels, a large selection of museological and contemporary objects that reveal the range of global references that have informed her practice, alongside various texts including a conversation with Ben Okri. Comprising a series of interleaved sections in an organic flow which pairs and juxtaposes the historic and the contemporary, featuring works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Lucie Rie, Jean Arp, as well as ancient vessels from Greece and Egypt, historic ceramics from Africa, Asia and Central America, and ritual objects from across the African continent.

The Journey of Things was originally published alongside the exhibition of the same name, led by Andrew Bonacina at The Hepworth Wakefield in Spring 2019.
