10月4日（土）より本屋青旗にて、雑誌『WERK』25周年を記念した展覧会を開催します。

シンガポールのデザイナー、テセウス・チャンによって制作される『Werk』は、2000年の創刊以来、一貫して「印刷物」という物質そのものと対峙し続けてきました。その哲学は、完成された美ではなく、生成の過程、つまりプロセスそのものをデザインと捉える点にあります。通常は失敗と見なされる印刷時のインクの滲みやズレ、紙のヨレといった偶発性を、テセウスは意図的に作品へと取り込み、これはすべてが予測可能で均質的なデジタルデザインが主流となった現代において、極めてラディカルな批評と言えます。

コム・デ・ギャルソン、森山大道、田名網敬一、シュタイデルなど、各号ごとにさまざまなアーティストやブランドと協働しながら、破られた表紙、ランダムな製本、スプレーで塗装されたカバーなど、毎号部数限定で手作業が加えられる『Werk』は、雑誌でありながら一冊ずつがユニークコピー。本展では、これまでに刊行された全号の展示のほか、版元のアーカイブから厳選したバックナンバーを販売します。また、25周年記念として刊行される最新34号・35号のリリースにあわせて制作された映像を展示します。

Beginning Saturday, October 4th, Aohata is pleased to present an exhibition celebrating the 25th anniversary of WERK magazine.

Since its first issue in 2000, WERK, created by Singaporean designer Theseus Chan, has consistently confronted the physical nature of the printed object itself. Its philosophy lies in treating design not as a finished aesthetic, but as the process of generation itself. Chan intentionally incorporates accidents typically seen as failures—such as ink bleeds, misalignments, and paper creases—into the work, a practice that stands as a radical critique in our current era dominated by predictable and uniform digital design.

Collaborating with a diverse range of artists and brands for each issue, including Comme des Garçons, Daido Moriyama, Keiichi Tanaami, and Steidl, every limited-run edition of WERK is manually handled. With features like torn covers, random binding, and spray-painted jackets, each magazine becomes a unique copy. In this exhibition, alongside a display of every issue ever published, a selection of back issues from the publisher's archive will be available for purchase. Additionally, a film produced to coincide with the release of the new 25th-anniversary issues, No. 34 and No. 35, will be on display.
