アムステルダム市の依頼を受け、ブックデザイナーのイルマ・ボーム（Irma Boom）とフレデリック・ペッシュ（Frederik Pesch）が制作した作品集。本書は、個人所有の敷地から新しい地下鉄路線に至るまで、建設現場の発掘調査で収集された考古学的遺物800点以上を図版で収録したもの。二人は、アムステルダムの地下に眠っていた数千点に及ぶ遺物の中から特定のオブジェクトを選別し、そのユニークな編集とブックデザインによって、アムステルダムの歴史を膨大なコレクションによって紐解いています。

本書に収録されている最も古い遺物は10万年以上前のものであり、最も新しいものはわずか数十年前に作られたものです。カメラやステッカー、キャッシュカードなど、私たちに馴染みのあるものから、中世の指輪や硬貨、陶器の破片、古代のクマの臼歯までを、推定される年代とともに収録。これらの遺物は時系列ではなく、視覚的、素材的、あるいはテーマ的なつながりに基づいて並置されており、対比と類似性によって新たな物語を描いています。価値や階層といった直線的なアプローチではない連想的な構造による予期せぬ組み合わせによって、想像力を掻き立て、ページを捲るたび絶えず新しい発見を与えてくれる一冊です。

The compilers present their surprising view on the archaeology of Amsterdam. The selection and composition of their work shed a personal light on the richness of artefacts from the Amsterdam soil, leaving the expressiveness of the objects themselves unchallenged.
