Neither Give nor Throw Away / Sophie Calle

フランスを代表する現代アーティスト、ソフィ・カル（Sophie Calle）の作品集。2023年、パリのピカソ美術館での個展準備中、嵐による水害でカルの倉庫が浸水。代表作の一つである「盲目の人々（The Blind）」を含む多くの作品が、カビの被害を受けました。修復家からは「破棄が望ましい」と宣告されたものの、カルはそれらを手放すことができませんでした。そこで彼女は、アーティストのローラン・トポールが「捨てることも譲ることもできない古いセーターを埋めた」という逸話に着想を得て、作品の「喪失」を新たな物語として再生させる一冊の本を制作します。

本書では、損傷した作品群とともに、喪失を連想する作品や、手放すことのできない自身の所有物をそれぞれのエピソードとともに収録。「Neither Give nor Throw Away（＝捨てることも譲ることもできない）」ものたちを埋葬するように展示された展覧会の写真15枚が封入され、読者はそれらの写真を本のページに一枚ずつ差し込むことができる仕様となっています。


New artist's book by Sophie Calle. In 2023, while preparing for a solo exhibition at the Musée Picasso in Paris, Calle’s storage was flooded during a storm. Many artworks, including pieces from her seminal series The Blind, suffered from mold damage. Although restorers advised that the works should be destroyed, Calle could not bring herself to part with them. Instead, inspired by the anecdote of artist Roland Topor burying an old sweater he could neither give away nor throw away, she has created a book that regenerates the loss of the artworks into a new narrative.

The book features the damaged pieces alongside other works that evoke loss and personal belongings that she cannot part with, each accompanied by its own story. Enclosed are 15 photographs of the exhibition, where these items—things to be Neither Given nor Thrown Away—were displayed as if buried. The reader can insert these photographs one by one into the pages of the book as they choose.
