シンガポールを拠点に活動するアトリエ・ホコ（Atelier HOKO）が手がける出版シリーズ『Science of the Secondary』。本シリーズは、りんごやコップ、時計といった、私たちの日常生活に存在するごく身近な事物や現象に焦点を当て、人間とそれらとの関係性を細やかに観察し、探求するプロジェクトです。第16号のテーマは「本」。日本語訳冊子が付属します。

「今日、異なる読書のフォーマットについて多くの混乱と議論が交わされています。私たちが本当に求めているのは、適切なサイズでめくりやすい、ごくシンプルな本であるにもかかわらず、それらのフォーマットは不必要な機能や特徴を無闇に詰め込み、それを不器用に実行することで、しばしば私たちを疲労させます。それにもかかわらず、多くの人々は物理的な本から電子機器への移行をシームレスに行い、何の影響も受けていないかのように見えます。これら2つのメディアの間には、知覚の仕方を心得ていなければならないほどの、控えめで抑制された、微細な違いが存在しているというのに。しかしどうやら私たちは、もはやそのことに疑問を持たない術をすでに学んでしまったようです……。」

人と物、そして空間がばらばらになりつつある現状を研究するインディペンデントのリサーチラボ。知らないことを「知らない」と理解する技術や寛容さを人びとの中に育み、新しい見方で現実に向き合うことで、日常におけるあらゆる現象に対してより高い好奇心を呼び起こすことを目標にしています。シンガポールを拠点に、アルヴィン・ホー（Alvin Ho）とクララ・コー（Clara Koh）により2002年に設立されました。

“These days, there is a lot of confusion and discussion about different reading formats. They often weary us with their variations, cramming functions and features we do not need and doing it clumsily when all we really want, is a simple book that is well-sized and easy to flip. Despite this, many people seamlessly transition from physical books to electronic devices and are seemingly unaffected even though between the two mediums lies differences that are discreet, restrained and subtle that one must know how to perceive. But it seems we have already learned not to question it…”

‘Science of the Secondary: Book’ is the 16th edition in the series of ongoing research conceived and developed by Atelier HOKO.

The publication series Science of the Secondary is produced by the Singapore-based Atelier HOKO. This series is a project that focuses on the highly familiar objects and phenomena present in our daily lives—such as an apple, a cup, or a clock—closely observing and exploring the relationships between humans and these subjects. 

Atelier HOKO (2002) is an independent creative practice that focuses on the study of the growing disengagement between people, things and space. The atelier hopes to cultivate in people, an open-ness and ability to un-know, bringing about a heightened curiosity towards all phenomena by taking a fresh look at reality. Founded by Alvin Ho and Clara Koh.
