A collection of works by photographer Naoyuki Hata. In his series "STILLNESS," Hata reveals landscapes captured within a darkness imperceptible to the human eye—scenes that only the camera can perceive.
While taking photographs in the dimness after the sun has set, everything gradually becomes uniformly dark, until even my own hands touching the camera disappear from sight. In the darkness, objects fall stillness, and in that stillness, the boundaries between the world and things blur and dissolve. When I roughly fix the focus and press the shutter, a landscape appears—one that only the camera can see.
By straining the eyes, by continuing to look, things begin to emerge. Each time, the world is determined anew—yet it is neither the beginning nor the end of the world. ーNaoyuki Hata
