写真家、森山大道の作品集。本書は、1999 年にサンフランシスコ近代美術館で開催された「Daido Moriyama: Stray Dog」展でスライド上映されたフィルムが、四半世紀の時を経て発見されたことをきっかけに制作されました。この展覧会は、その後アメリカやヨーロッパを巡回し、森山大道が世界の舞台に向けて歩み出す契機となり、国際的な活躍へとつながっていきます。本作では、1999年当時、森山大道が自作を選び、スライドフィルムに焼き付けた140 点の作品を収録。編集・造本設計・出版を手掛けたのは、日本を代表する造本家の町口覚。表紙には、森山の代表作「三沢の犬（Stray Dog）」が採用され、表焼き・裏焼き2種類のカバーからお選びいただけます。このカバーは、撮影時（1971年／青森県三沢市）から世に広まる過程で、表焼き・裏焼きのふたつの作品が存在することを表しています。さらに、世界の第一線で活躍する4名のキュレーターが、森山との出会いについて綴ったエピソード（英語）を掲載。森山自身がそれぞれのエピソードを読み、当時を振り返った貴重な談話（英語）も収められています。「PARIS PHOTO 2024」で発表され大きな話題を呼んだ一冊です。日本発売の特典として、これらのテキストをすべて翻訳した「和訳冊子」が付属します。

森山大道（もりやま・だいどう）
1938年大阪生まれ。岩宮武二、細江英公のアシスタントを経て1964年独立。写真雑誌などで作品を発表。1967年「にっぽん劇場」で日本写真批評家協会新人賞受賞。1968年から1970年にかけて写真同人誌「プロヴォーク」に参加。ハイコントラストや粗粒子画面の作風は“アレ・ブレ・ボケ”と評され、写真界に衝撃を与える。世界的評価も高く、2018年、フランス政府より芸術文化勲章「シュヴァリエ」が授与。2019年、ハッセルブラッド財団国際写真賞受賞。現在も世界各国で個展を開催するなど、精力的に活動を行っている。

This photobook by renowned Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama was created following the rediscovery of a slide film that was originally screened at the Daido Moriyama: Stray Dog exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1999. The exhibition, which later toured across the United States and Europe, marked a defining moment in Moriyama’s career, propelling him onto the global stage and cementing his international presence.

The book features 140 works personally selected by Moriyama in 1999 and transferred onto slide film. The editorial direction, book design, and publication were undertaken by Japan’s esteemed book designer Satoshi Machiguchi. The cover showcases Moriyama’s iconic Stray Dog, Misawa and is available in two variations—either in its standard or reversed print—reflecting the two versions that emerged as the image gained recognition since its capture in Misawa, Aomori, in 1971.

Additionally, the book includes essays (in English) by four internationally acclaimed curators, each recounting their encounters with Moriyama. In response, Moriyama himself revisits these narratives in a series of newly recorded reflections (also in English), offering rare insights into his own memories and experiences.

Unveiled at PARIS PHOTO 2024 to great acclaim, this publication is now available in Japan with an exclusive supplementary booklet containing full Japanese translations of all texts.

Daido Moriyama

Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1938, Daido Moriyama is one of the most influential figures in contemporary photography. After working as an assistant to photographers Takeji Iwamiya and Eikoh Hosoe, he became independent in 1964 and began publishing his work in photography magazines. In 1967, he received the New Artist Award from the Japan Photo Critics Association for his series Japan Theater. From 1968 to 1970, he was a key member of the influential photography magazine Provoke.

Moriyama's signature style—characterized by high contrast, coarse grain, and radical compositions—became known as Are, Bure, Boke ("rough, blurred, out of focus"), shaking the foundations of traditional photography. His work has earned global acclaim, and in 2018, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Chevalier) by the French government. In 2019, he received the prestigious Hasselblad Award.

Still actively exhibiting worldwide, Moriyama continues to push the boundaries of photography, maintaining his dynamic presence on the international stage.
