THOUGHTS IN THE ROOTS / Giuseppe Penone

1960年代後半にイタリアで興った芸術運動「アルテ・ポーヴェラ」のメンバーとして国際的な注目を集めて以来、一貫して自然と人間との関係性をテーマに探求を続けるアーティスト、ジュゼッペ・ペノーネ（Giuseppe Penone）。本書は、その約半世紀にわたる活動の軌跡をたどる作品集です。

ペノーネは、木、石、水、植物といった自然物から、ブロンズ、鉄、大理石といった彫刻の伝統的な素材まで、多様なマテリアルを用いて制作を行います。彼の作品の根底にあるのは、自然の成長プロセスや構造といった目に見えない力と、人間の知覚や身体との相互作用を可視化しようとする試みです。木の年輪に沿ってその成長の軌跡を注意深く彫り出した《Alberi (Trees)》シリーズは、彼の思想を象徴する代表作として知られています。

本書では、1969年の初期作から近作までを網羅的に収録。有機的なものと人工的なもの、内と外、人間とそれ以外の存在との間に存在する、詩的で哲学的な対話を美しい図版で紹介します。巻末にはペノーネとハンス・ウルリッヒ・オブリストとのロングインタビューが収録されており、アーティスト自身の言葉から、そのインスピレーションの源泉や制作活動について深く知ることができます。ブックデザインは、ロンドンを拠点とするデザインスタジオ〈Atelier Dyakova〉によるもの。

2025年4月から9月にかけてロンドンの「サーペンタイン・ギャラリー（Serpentine Gallery）」で開催した展覧会に伴い刊行された一冊。

The catalogue brings together works from 1969 to the present, illustrating Penone's enduring fascination with the interplay between organic and artistic processes and the poetic relationship between humans and the environment. Designed by Atelier Dyakova, the publication also includes an extended interview between Penone and Hans Ulrich Obrist discussing Penone's inspiration and practice.
